Assignment 3 typo
In Q2 of A3, there is a typographical error:
where it says that
"you need to solve the linear system
J^{-1} ( x bar ^ (k) ) v = f bar ( x bar ^ (k) ),
using backslash."

this should read

"you need to solve the linear system
J ( x bar ^ (k) ) v = f bar ( x bar ^ (k) ),
using backslash."

So the matrix of the linear system you solve is the Jacobian
(as is in the notes) and not the inverse Jacobian.

This is mathematically equaivalent to computing
v = J^{-1} ( x bar ^ (k) ) * f bar ( x bar ^ (k) )
but you should not use inverses for computational purposes.

RE: Assignment 3 typo
Should f bar also be negative like in the lecture slides? (slide 212)

It does not matter.
You can say

solve Js = f
compute x = x - s

or

solve Js = -f
compute x = x + s

Just be consistent..
